Streptococcus mutans is the name of the bacteria that causes cavities that is quite abundant in our mouths. It normally resides on our teeth and gums, eating away at food particles left behind as we eat. Even brushing and other oral health regimen cannot totally eliminate the nasty germ from our mouths.
Heavy flossing or a dental procedure can send this nasty bug into the bloodstream infecting the heart and causing a lot of problems there. The condition known as endocarditis has bacteria from teeth invading the heart weakening it and causing havoc with our pumper. Better care and tools are needed in the continuing fight against tooth decay so researchers are fighting a never ending battle.
